The first wine Angelo ever made was a Syrah Grenache blend in 2018. When more wines joined the Yo El Rey family in 2019, he named this one for an old Casio watch forever stuck at 8:49 that now serves as a daily reminder to him and his loved ones far and wide to pause and check in on each other.
Syrah grapes from sandy Stellenbosch and Grenache berries from decomposed granite in the Breedekloof are picked and fermented across different batches with varying amounts of whole bunches are added to fermenters. The batches are then aged in old oak for 10 months, blended, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
This silky, grippy splendour of cherry and pink peppercorns is best served slightly chilled and with someone you like at 8:49.
A low-intervention, medium-bodied South African red wine from Stellenbosch. Crafted by winemaker Angelo van Dyk, this 70% Syrah/30% Grenache blend. It has bright red fruit notes, peppery, savoury, and fresh character, matured in old oak for 10-11 months.
Pairing: Ideal with traditional South African braai, including Karoo lamb chops or spicy dishes.
