Sourced from a 2 hectare vineyard on our home farm in the Voor Paardeberg on Perdeberg decomposed
granite soils with clay. The vineyard is east facing and managed by Chris Williams. The vineyard is starting to
come into its own in terms of quality and site expression. The vines are low-trellised. A small crop was
ripened under the good conditions of 2021 and harvested at modest sugar levels but at full flavour
ripeness to ensure lower alcohol but brighter acidity, freshness and fruit expression.
Chris has made a more French Style Grenache....complex, earthy & full bodied.
Tasting Notes: The Foundry Grenache Noir 2021 has a youthful vivid purple hue. On the nose there is a distinctive floral fleshy red fruit quality with lifted floral, pomegranate and fynbos (garrigue, wild herbs) notes. The palate is medium bodied with intense crushed red fruit, pink pepper spiciness and an intricate, fine tannic structure giving it focus and length. Persistant on the finish, this is delicious now and should improve and evolve for up to 10 years. To fully appreciate the fruit and texture, serve this wine slightly chilled, between 12°C and 15°C.
Food Pairing: The wine pairs excellently with roasted poultry (duck, turkey, chicken), lamb, or pork dishes. Specific recommendations include braised pink meats and spit-roasted suckling pig. Mediterranean Flavors: Due to its herbal notes (fynbos) and bright acidity, it works well with Mediterranean dishes, such as herb-crusted lamb chops, ratatouille, or pasta with tomato-based sauces. Spiced & Gamey Dishes: The spice element (pink pepper) makes it a good match for Mediterranean cuisine and dishes with Mediterranean spices like cumin and coriander. It can also handle gamey dishes.
