Hannes Storm has spent nearly 2 decades in the pursuit of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay perfection. No single SA winemaker is more dedicated or focused on growing and vinifying Pinot and it shows
Sourced from a steep, northeast-facing slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil. The wine includes roughly 10% whole bunch fermentation and was matured for 12 months in 228-litre French oak barrels (approximately 25-28% new). 2023 was one of the coolest years on record for the region, resulting in a wine that is energetic and opulent with lower alcohol levels
Tasting Notes: Expect a perfumed nose of red cherry, strawberry, musk, and orange zest, complemented by floral notes of rose and violet. It is medium-bodied with a "slick and well-defined" texture. Key flavors include raspberry, crunchy dark berry, and spicy undertones of white pepper and clove. The wine features powdery, refined tannins and a long, savoury finish.
Food Pairing: Known for its elegant, perfumed, and tautly structured character with red cherry, herbal, and stony notes, pairs best with dishes that match its refined intensity. Ideal pairings include duck, goose, game birds, roasted quail, salmon, and wild mushroom risotto.
‘Picking before the rain was very important in 2023 and Hannes Storm did just that. Vrede comes from a 3.6-hectare block planted with the 113, 115 and 777 clones on Bokkeveld shale and is generally the most opulent of his three single-site Pinots. Savoury fleshy and slightly ferrous, it has layers of rose petal, wild strawberry and orange zest and refined, detailed tannins. 2024-31’ - Tim Atkin MW, 96/100
