From 2 vineyards in this vintage predominantly the same high altitude bush vines from Piekenierskloof and another vineyard grown on schist. In the cellar the grapes were whole-bunch pressed and transferred without settling straight to 2 concrete eggs for fermentation and maturation. This vintage has more texture than recent years, flintiness and a touch of reduction typical of early harvested grapes fermented in concrete. As always bottled early after only 8 months to preserve the freshness of this wine.
This Rall Grenache Blanc 2024 is fine, focussed and has a real savory edge that I’m finding throughout the 22 whites. Still from the same high altitude bush vines in the Piekenierskloof and like the other white wines in the range, the grapes are whole-bunch pressed and transferred without settling straight to the vessels for fermentation. This vintage spent 8 months on the primary lees in concrete eggs and amphorae before bottling. – Donovan Rall
Tasting Notes: "touch of reduction" with flavors of citrus, pear, and quince, offering a "serious, focused, and intense" palate with high acidity. Very elegant, linear, and pure with a dry, mineral finish. Tight and pithy with a lovely purity of fine green and red appley fruits, peach and herb. A firm summer favourite, suitable for drinking now or over the next few years.
Food Pairing: Enjoy with seared tuna, Asian spices, cold beef fillet salad, roast chicken or pork loin, chicken casserole or a relaxed cheese platter. A risotto with lemon zest, peas, and parmesan, or pasta with a light cream sauce, complements the wine's mouthfeel.
The same Piekenierskloof vineyard that has supplied the core of this wine since 2015, is showcased alone this year, picked in two tranches. Concrete egg fermented and aged, it's stony, tangy and refreshing, with flavours of quince, wet stones and lemongrass, a waft of petrichor and a touch of flinty reduction. 2026-30. Tim Atkin 94
