Chenin Blanc is South Africa's OG varietal. Authentic. Exceptional. Foundational to the country's wine identity. We source this from Kaapzicht's bush vines planted in 1985 on northwest slopes in Stellenbosch. These old vines dig deep into decomposed granite soils and extract the essence of the site.
We harvest by hand in the cool morning hours. Whole bunches go straight to the press to preserve purity. The juice settles naturally without sulfur. Native yeasts drive fermentation in seasoned barrels. Ten months of patient aging with minimal handling lets the vineyard speak. The result captures everything we love about great Chenin.
Vibrant stone fruit meets zippy citrus acidity. A mineral backbone speaks to those ancient soils. Ocean breezes from Table Bay and False Bay moderate the warm afternoon sun. This creates tension between ripeness and freshness that makes the wine electric.
Tasting Notes: Crystalline yellow in color, the wine features intense, complex aromas of honeyed white peach, cinnamon-dusted apple, and hints of vanilla pod. It shows a "monumental" amount of flavour concentration with high, zesty, and electric acidity. Flavours include white citrus, yellow grapefruit pith, and green apple, with a waxy, textured mouthfeel. A "tightly packed" structure with a long, precise finish.
“There is something incredibly alluring about this crystalline canary yellow Chenin Blanc 2024. Youthfully bright and enticing, the aromatics show a fabulously complex array of white peaches in honey, baked apples dusted with cinnamon spice, freshly baked apple strudel and lovely vanilla pod nuances. The oaking is incredibly considerate and well integrated, giving way to zesty, electrically tangy fresh acids, mouthwatering white citrus, tangerine, yellow grapefruit pith and green apple pastille fruits. The precision and concentration in the mouth is monumental, but always remains beautifully balanced, incredibly energetic and focused. This has Rudger’s obsessive winemaking fingerprints all over it. Wow! What a debut. Drink on release and over 8-10 years.” – 96 Points – Greg Sherwood MW
