Blend: Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsault
From vineyards at elevations of 300 - 400 metres above sea level on the schist and quartz-rich soils of Roundstone Estate on the slopes of the Kasteelberg. The vines are planted as bushvines and trained stok-by-paaltjie (echelas), logically following the contours of the slopes, and incorporate natural alleyways of fynbos.
The varieties are vinified as 100% whole bunches, gently foot-trodden in 500L open-top barrels to initiate fermentation with the indigenous yeasts. Gentle hand punch-downs kept the cap moist and ensured a delicate extraction. After a slow, six-week fermentation and maceration, the wine was pressed and returned to the same barrels for maturation. 22 months in 500L French oak barrels
Tasting Notes: The debut ROUNDSTONE is a beautifully perfumed wine with great elegance and fine structure. The perfect weather conditions of the 2023 vintage accentuated the fynbos and dark fruit notes of Syrah planted on Schist. This, combined with the freshness and floral perfume of Cinsault, and firm, fine-grained tannins of Grenache, make for a complex, finely balanced blend that received 97 points ahead of release. Best
served at 16 to 18 °C. Decanting is recommended when the wine is opened in the first 10 years from vintage.
Food Pairing: Perfumed aroma, dark fruit, and fine-grained, schist-derived tannins. This elegant, medium-bodied wine is best paired with savory, aromatic dishes, particularly roasted or grilled meats. Aromatic Meats: Aged lamb shoulder, roasted rack of lamb, or grilled lamb chops. Wild Game: Venison, duck, or other game birds. Umami-Rich Dishes: Mushroom-based dishes (risotto or tarts), roasted vegetables, or dishes with truffle elements. Charcuterie & Pork: Slow-roasted pork belly, smoked pork ribs, or a charcuterie board.
