This wine is a tribute to all old vine Tinta Baroccas of South Africa, which for a long time have supported some beautifully fine ‘red blends’ but seldom got the recognition they deserve. A variety that is very well adapted to the Western Cape and if given the opportunity, Tinta Barocca produces excellent wines with great personality and identity. The layered tannin structure of the grape makes it an ideal partner for a variety of dishes. A blend of three vineyards all aged over 40 years - of origin Stellenbosch and Swartland (Paardeberg) - grown on a soil combination of Bokkeveld shale, decomposed granite and clay.
Tasting Notes: Aromatics of muddled raspberries, spice and cacao before a palate showing wild strawberry,
blueberry dark chocolate and cinnamon. Grippy, earthy tannins provide backbone for the fruit as it deepens with time in glass. A generous showing of a wine leaning into its spicy, dark fruited character while remaining fresh and bright. Food Pairing - Grilled Ostrich Fillet in a Coffee Rub with a black pepper sauce.
Grapes from the Helderberg plus two sites on the Paardeberg, all over 40 years old. The aromatics are unrestrained as so often is the case with Port varieties – red and black berries, flowers, fynbos, a hint of mint, earth and spice. The palate, meanwhile, shows good depth of fruit, bright acidity and firm tannins. Layers of flavour. Alc: 13.18%. CE’s rating: 93/100.
