A remarkable old-vine Cinsault that honours one of South Africa's oldest vineyards
The Leeu Passant Wellington Old Vines Basson Cinsault 2024 is sourced from an extraordinary single vineyard in Wellington, planted in 1900 and recognised as the oldest surviving post-phylloxera red wine vineyard in South Africa. Rooted in an ancient riverbed of deep, sandy alluvial soils, these dry-farmed bush vines produce fruit of remarkable perfume, finesse and structure. A decade of regenerative organic farming has further elevated the quality of this historic site. In the cellar, the wine is made with minimal intervention. Whole clusters are gently crushed before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast, followed by three weeks of extended maceration and twenty months of maturation in French oak barrels. The result is a beautifully transparent expression of heritage, place and patience.
Tasting notes: Highly aromatic, with expressive notes of fresh dark raspberry, red cherry and wild herbs. The palate is finely layered, revealing vibrant pomegranate fruit supported by exceptionally silky tannins and remarkable precision. There is an effortless balance between freshness and structure, with a subtle savoury complexity emerging through the long, elegant finish. Built on purity rather than power, this is a Cinsault that will continue to gain texture and complexity with careful cellaring.
Food pairing: A graceful and expressive Cinsault that pairs beautifully with refined, flavourful dishes. Roast Duck: Crispy-skinned duck with a cherry reduction complements the wine's vibrant red fruit and silky tannins. Grilled Lamb Cutlets: Simply seasoned lamb enhances the wine's elegance and fine structure. Roast Quail: Delicate game birds bring out the wine's perfume, finesse and lingering finish.
