A refined Elgin Chardonnay with striking minerality, flinty complexity and vibrant freshness. The wine maker, Nico Grobler's Chardonnay is Burgundian in texture and complexity. It has purity and crystalline fruit aplenty, with a linear, cashmere-coated palate. Youthful, layered, delicious. With malolactic fermentation. it was whole-bunch pressed, allowing natural fermentation, and was raised for 12 months in 228-litre ‘untoasted’ barrels’, 20% new and the rest second and third fill. An elegant expression of the Elgin terroir.
Tasting Notes: Beautifully layered Chardonnay that balances richness with crisp, wet stone minerality, and green pineapple on the nose, with smooth, fresh citrus zest and a slight creamy, brioche, yet savoury finish.
Food Pairing: Pairs perfectly with rich seafood, roasted poultry, creamy pasta, risotto, and soft cheeses like Brie. Seafood: Butter-poached lobster, grilled line fish with lemon beurre blanc, and seared scallops. Poultry & White Meat: Roasted chicken with tarragon, turkey, quail, or a grilled chicken burger. Creamy Dishes: Mushroom risotto or pasta with cream-based sauces.
‘Flinty reduction, vanilla, cinnamon and some leesy complexity currently sit above subtle notes of citrus and apple. The palate is super-dense with driving acidity and an emphatically dry finish. No nonsense. Alc: 13.5%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag, 96/100
