A rare old-vine Tinta Barocca that rewrites expectations
The Fledge & Co. OBV Tinta Barocca 2023 is a celebration of one of South Africa's most underrated heritage varieties. Sourced from old bush vines in the Paardeberg, the "OBV" (Old Bush Vine) designation reflects both the age of the vineyard and the character it brings to the wine. Better known as a blending grape in Port-style wines, Tinta Barocca takes centre stage here, revealing a remarkably elegant and expressive side. Crafted with minimal intervention, the wine allows the old vines and distinctive Swartland terroir to speak for themselves, resulting in a wine that is vibrant, textured and unmistakably individual.
Tasting notes: Expressive aromas of wild blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum are layered with notes of violets, fynbos and sweet baking spice. The palate is beautifully balanced, offering juicy dark berry fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and bright natural acidity. Gentle savoury notes and a subtle earthy character add depth, while the finish is long, fresh and remarkably refined. Although generous in flavour, the wine retains an effortless elegance that makes it both approachable in its youth and worthy of further cellaring.
Food pairing: A vibrant and characterful red that shines alongside richly flavoured yet thoughtfully prepared dishes. Braaied lamb chops: The wine's bright fruit and fine tannins complement smoky, flame-grilled lamb beautifully. Beef short rib: Slow-cooked beef with a red wine reduction mirrors the wine's depth while balancing its freshness. Roasted aubergine: Charred aubergine with tahini and pomegranate brings out the wine's savoury complexity. Venison loin: Lean game meats enhance its elegant structure and layers of dark fruit.
