A remarkable old-vine Semillon that honours Franschhoek's rich heritage
The Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2022 is crafted from three Certified Heritage Vineyards, among the oldest surviving Semillon vineyards in South Africa. Planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942, these remarkable old vines have adapted to the Franschhoek Valley over generations, producing fruit of exceptional concentration, structure and longevity. Two vineyards are dry-farmed bush vines rooted in the ancient Franschhoek riverbed, while the third grows on steep, south-facing decomposed granite and quartz soils. A small portion of historic Muscat d'Alexandrie, also planted in 1902, is included to enhance the wine's aromatic complexity. Fermented naturally in French oak barriques and concrete eggs, then matured for 14 months with minimal intervention, the result is a Semillon of extraordinary texture, purity and ageing potential.
Tasting notes: Orange blossom, ripe peach and honeydew melon lead an expressive bouquet, layered with hints of ginger spice, lemon zest and delicate savoury notes. The palate unfolds with flavours of orange marmalade, preserved lemon and lime cordial, supported by subtle oak that adds richness and texture without overwhelming the fruit. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is beautifully balanced by integrated acidity, carrying impressive concentration and precision through to a long finish marked by blood orange, chamomile, angelica and a gentle saline, pithy edge.
Food pairing: A richly textured and beautifully layered Semillon that rewards thoughtful food pairings. Seafood & Shellfish: Grilled prawns, seared scallops or lobster showcase the wine's vibrant acidity and citrus-driven freshness while complementing its creamy texture. White Fish: Baked kingklip, pan-fried monkfish or line fish finished with a lemon butter sauce highlight its mineral edge and elegant fruit profile. Roast Chicken & Veal: Veal in a light cream sauce mirror the wine's richness while allowing its freshness to shine. Asian Cuisine: Thai green curry, sushi or fragrant dishes with lemongrass, lime and ginger are lifted by the wine's bright acidity, delicate spice and aromatic complexity.
